OCR: Government Releases Directory of Education Resources Page 86 DC, 1-6/US Newswire: For the first time ever, American students, teachers and parents will have access to a comprehensive listing of educational resources in their local area, as well as throughout the nation. The "Guidebook to Excellence: A Directory of Federal Facilities and Other Resources for Mathematics and Science Education Improvement" was released at a White House press conference. A teacher or parent anywhere in the U.S. can now look up those nearby federal laboratories and other state and regional facilities that sponsor science and mathematics initiatives, and obtain the name and phone number of someone who can help. On Nov. 16, 1992, President Bush signed Executive Order 12821 on Improving Mathematics and Science Education in Support of the National Education Goals, making education part of the mission of each federal agency and empowering those agencies to utilize their resources to improve science and mathematics education in America. The Guidebook to Excellence enables teachers, parents and students to take advantage of the federal laboratories, scientists and equipment made available by the Executive Order. Educators, parents and anyone else wishing to receive a copy of the Guidebook to Excellence should call 615-576-8401, or write to the Office of Scientific and Technical Information, P.O. Box 62, Oak Ridge, Tenn. 37831.
